“LGBT Youth: The Personal and Political” on the Kojo Nnamdi Show

Sadie-Ryanne Vashti, a DCTC member, will be featured on the Kojo Nnamdi Show today for a discussion about issues facing LGBT youth. You can listen in at WAMU 88.5 FM (a local National Public Radio affiliate), live at 12:00pm. Or, if you aren’t able to listen live, you can stream it online anytime by clicking here!

Anti-bullying Bill Before DC Council

Next Monday, the DC City Council is hosting a public hearing on a bill to address bullying in DC schools. The DC Trans Coalition is joining many of our allies to testify in support of this legislation, which includes specific protections on the basis of gender identity and expression and would create training for educators and students.

Help us make DC a safer place for trans youth. If you are able, please join us at the Wilson Building to show your support. (If you can’t come in person, you can also submit written testimony!) For more information on the hearing and how you can submit your own testimony, see below the cut. Click here for more information on the Bill from GLSEN, or you can read DCTC’s draft testimony here.

Help us make the next DC Trans Needs Assessment happen.

As we head into a busy week of events, we’d like to remind all of our friends and supporters that the hard work of creating trans justice does not end once Trans Awareness Week and the Trans Day of Remembrance are over. For us at DCTC, it means getting back down to work on some huge, exciting projects like our Needs Assessment.

Along with local allies, we are launching the first trans-specific research project in over a decade. The information we obtain will help us identify and understand barriers to justice in our lives. It will also be a way to ensure that the voices of all DC’s diverse trans communities are able to influence decision-making, whether here at DCTC or over at the Wilson Building.

“Phase One” will consist of a series of ten round table meetings, and we’re really hoping that you will join us — as a volunteer, a participant, or both. (Note: participation is limited to trans and gender non-conforming people who live in the District only.) Be sure to read more about the project by clicking this link.

As a reminder, we are an all-volunteer, entirely member-support organization, and that means we are in desperate need of time and money commitments to make sure this project comes to fruition. If your organization would like to endorse the needs assessment or help us with raise funds to support the work, please write to us at dctranscoalition@gmail.com.

The National Center for Transgender Equality‘s 7th Anniversary Celebration, honoring none other than the DC Trans Coalition! Tickets are $50 toward NCTE. From them:

Founded in 2005, The DC Trans Coalition has done groundbreaking work here that has not only made DC safer and more equitable, but has led to changes around the country. Six states have used a model driver’s license policy pioneered here in the nation’s capital and championed by DCTC. Their work on prison policies and public accommodation access (especially with regards to public restrooms) has made an incredible difference for transgender people, and this is just the start of their many accomplishments. Please join us in honoring this all volunteer, community-based organization.

The National Press Club is located at 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, Washington, DC 20045. We’ll see you there.

Can’t attend? Please make a donation to support our ongoing work. Thank you so much to all who have already donated! Together, we are building a strong movement for transgender equality!

Say no to police brutality!

We recently learned of a disturbing incident of police violence in the District. Even though, as far as we know, the woman involved was not trans, it is important that we stand in solidarity firmly against ALL forms of state-sanctioned violence and abuse of power. We know from personal experiences and community testimonials that incidents like this are far too common, and marginalized people like trans women are often the targets. Please join us in signing the petition.

More info from a publicly distributed letter: Continue reading Say no to police brutality!
